Nuova Porta - L'Acqua Torre

Il Occupati Cancello : A Laundry Mat

The Program

In an attempt to reinvigorate the old gate, the intervention alters the ground and tower to improve pedestrian crossing through the historic and modern zones, in addition to providing points from which people could look out to the city while doing their laundry in cantilevered containers.

Essentially, the intervention redesigns the existing structure into a water tower and bridge.  The water tower occupies and flows through the brick building, pulling out from the structure at currently sealed openings; the new grows from the old.  Where the tower is taken apart, the material is reused to construct anchoring elements that compose the pedestrian bridge (highlighted in maroon above).

The uppermost section of the tower is a vessel for water that has been pumped from the neighboring Bacchiligione River and is filtered thoroughly before being distributed downwards to the machines occupying the level below.

City Map

Site Map
Red indicates where the walls enclosing the city once stood.  The site is located at the outermost portion of these, where the Bacchiligioni River intersects it.

Light Purple indicates the historic city; teal indicates modern constructions; medium purple indicates those in-between.  Neighborhoods by the existing wall seem to become an extension of the wall and the current tower and gate is a part of this.  The intervention seeks to introduce the modern into the historic district.

Current pedestrian paths through the gate is risky (above and to the right)....many times leading people onto the streets and thus in harm's way.  A primary goal of the project is thus to fix this (above and to the left).

The street moving through the current gate is redesigned to abut the tower and the sidewalk is widened to lessen the acute angle that causes pedestrians to walk onto the street.
