P1X3 New Door (Nouva Porta) in the Wall (Muro)

Site and Program
.
We recognize that the wall(s) exist as both a physical barrier and a metaphorical one. In either instance they have both spatial and social implications historically and in the present. The purpose of our new gate is to charge the possible future of the wall.
.
  • Site - Each of you chose a place along the path of either the new wall or the old wall.
  • Program - Each of you identified a use for this gate/door to accessorize the use as a passage.
.
It was great to get these important decisions made in studio today.
.
Over the weekend you will charrette this project. Using the combinations of the media at your disposal, design and represent the project. Part of your challenge is to design a workflow for yourself that optimizes your time. How can we address the limitations of our studio environment in order to be able to do the most work, make many decisions and show the process/result? I think you should feel free to work sketchy but smart. I remember in the old days when we used paper and pencils we would erase and redo portions of our drawings. These drawings were process, but we would clean them up one last time at the end and they became presentation drawings. The layers of corrected work would sometimes show through giving the final product the beauty of an old Italian facade ;-)

Consider:
  • sketching
  • drafting
  • photomontage
  • mapping
  • physical or digital modeling
  • mix and match
  • etc
We will use "real drawings", plus have a scanner and cameras to make manually performed work digital.
.
For Monday consider trying to rough out each of the elements listed below. We have chosen these drawings because they help make design decisions just as well as they present your design.
.
  1. City Key Plan, indicating the location of your project in the overall plan of Vicenza
  2. Site Plan - that shows the situation of your gate in the immediate context. Includes major transformations of the existing condition (demolition, new construction)
  3. Elevations and Section/Elevations (3) each side of the wall + cross section. Elevations should include context and materiality.
  4. Detail  (3/4" = 1'-0") - one drawing that indicates how your construction directly interfaces with the program/occupant.
  5. Perspective (1) and/or sketch vignettes (4) - construct an experiential view of your project that includes materiality. Sketch vignettes might be cinematic (serialized).
* A digital model is not a requirement. However, even a simple model can aid in the creation of these materials. Even a quick physical model can help you to construct projected views.
