Site 3: Arsenale di Venezia
(this is still a work in progress)
Generators:
The Venetian Arsenal was one of the first to use assembly line techniques for ship building. So, the idea of linear progression came to my mind. This concept will pertain to circulation and program. The existing context has strong bearing-wall style buildings on the east. But the facades are crumbling on the west side of the canal. The form of the building will generate from the strong gestures that start to disperse as you circulate through the space (this concept is sketched in the bottom image).
Intervention Characteristics:
strong gestural bearing walls
linear progression (circulation, program or metaphorical)
ramps- slow circulation with views
Strong movements that lead to dispersed movements
Material of context:
west: crumbling facade, brick and stucco, rotting wooden shutters
east: stone bases, wrought iron on doors and windows, stucco facades on upper floor levels
Possible Program:
flower shop-assemblage of bouquets with roof garden
food line and roof terrace on bridge
Beginnings of a site plan
Extruded heights of existing context
Site 3
These maps (above and below) helped me to pick site 3 because they show that it is less likely to flood and is elevated higher than the surrounding area.
Quick sketches brainstorming ideas for form and circulation.
