Sketch - Pastel exploration 1

Basilica Palladiana

I tried to create depth on the paper by toning the space behind the arcade first.  After setting up the shadow gradient for the left and right columns, I began an additive process by highlighting the hard edges in white (smudging or drawing along a paper guide).  I have no idea what the proper techniques for pastels are, if any, but it seems that tones can be averaged together by smearing the extra powder about or blended by the closeness of the strokes.  With enough pressure, a new tone can always be placed over another without the underlying tone showing through.  Closeness of the strokes refers to half toning and pointillism, as in introducing multiple strokes, marks, or whatever, at a close distance from one another to create a single entity.
