Morphological Tourism "The Thriving Water City"

Venice in the 18 and early 1900's was known for being one of the worlds most dominant maritime and trade empires. Today the city of 118 islands is the one of the worlds most popular tourist destinations with an estimated 50,000 tourists a day. Venice has always used water to its advantage to better its economy, but now the city is rumored to be slowly sinking, along with constant flooding. Ironic

The oldest map I could find, 1615. Interesting to see how the canals have been diverted since then.

A couple modern projects outside of Venice:

Appleton Living by Minarc: http://www.archdaily.com/451768/appleton-living-minarc/
Banca Dell'Occhio by Emilio Ambasz: http://architecturelinked.com/profiles/blogs/banca-dellocchio-by-emilio

On the island I'd be happy to see any Scarpa stair or detail
