Wall Walk - A Series of Juxtapositions

Winding Bacchiglione

Ovest Citta Porta (West City Gate)

On the western side of Vicenza, the juxtaposition between the context within the walls, and the context outside of the walls is quite stark. It is a completely different experience. These portas act as literal entry ways into history. They, and the walls, have been woven into the city fabric by not being put on display, but used by people. They continue to mark an important location for all Vicenzians, the ending of the historic area.

Campo Marzio North Boundary

Barbed Wire Fence-Campo Marzio Border
Although the moat on the northern side of Campo Marzio was originally meant to keep invaders out, it is now ironically used as a boundary for more wealthy Vicenzian residential houses. This boundary has been integrated into the city fabric while still being implemented as a definite border and boundary.

Juxtaposing Wall Joint Details

The city walls have been integrated into more modern buildings in a variety of ways, but mainly as a literal joint, without much attempt to conceal the connection. I found this very interesting, because it tells that the joint will strengthen over time by continuously having layers and information added onto it.
